Four years of commitment through the Global Social Justice Fund

Now in its fourth year, Sony Group’s $100 million Global Social Justice Fund remains focused on supporting anti-racist initiatives and educational opportunities around the world that foster equal rights. The Fund aligns with community partners and brings together the various Sony Group companies — Sony Corporation of America, Sony Electronics Inc., Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony Music Group, and Sony Pictures Entertainment — to help promote solutions in the areas of civic and community engagement, criminal justice reform, education, and diversity through impact.

We are excited to join the various Sony Group companies as we collectively work to build a world that fosters equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone. Through the fund, Sony Interactive Entertainment has committed more than $17 million to date to advance race equity and inclusion within the gaming industry and beyond. We’ve established partnerships with local, national, and global organizations to help diversify the gaming industry. This includes working with partners like Gameheads, a Bay Area-based nonprofit focused on using video game design, development, and DevOps to engage, prepare, and train young and aspiring student developers from historically disadvantaged communities across the Bay Area for careers in the tech and video game industries. With support from the Fund and Sony Interactive’s Employee Networks (eNets) — Unidos@PlayStation,  Black@PlayStation, and API@PlayStation — we are able to partner with Gameheads to create opportunities for their students while also working to diversify the gaming industry and prepare the next generation of talent. 

Additionally, support from the Fund has created programs like PlayStation Career Pathways to help increase the pipeline of historically marginalized talent in the gaming industry. In the fall of 2023, we welcomed the first cohort of 26 Pathways Scholars from Jackie Robinson Foundation and University of Southern California (USC) Games to the multi-year career readiness program. This fall, we’ll welcome the second cohort of scholars, which will include students from three partners including UNCF (United Negro College Fund). Students in the program have had the opportunity to learn more about gaming careers, receive personal coaching and networking advice from Sony Interactive employees, experience first-hand the inner workings of the gaming business, and secure financial support to continue their educational studies in preparation for a career in gaming.

We remain committed to the mission of the social justice fund and are thrilled to work with these students and our partners to improve equity and create belonging for the gaming industry.
